The Blessing of Being in Christ

Adapted from Pastor Jim’s Sermon

3-minute read

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1:3-6

As we gaze into the night sky, filled with stars that have stretched across the heavens for millennia, we are reminded of the vastness of God’s love for us. Before the universe was formed, before a single star twinkled in the darkness, God chose us in Christ. This perspective is not just a ground for our faith; it’s a vivid illustration of the depth and eternity of God’s love. In Christ, we have a heavenly status—”already but not yet”—granting us courage and hope amidst earthly challenges.

The Foundation of Our Blessings

At the heart of our blessings in Christ is the doctrine of union with Christ. This inseparable, intimate, and transformative bond defines our identity and our spiritual journey. In Christ, we are united with Him in His death, resurrection, and ongoing life, forming the foundation of our transformation. This union brings every spiritual blessing from the heavenly realms into our lives, offering us a new perspective on our earthly struggles.

Adopted for Holiness and Blamelessness

The doctrine of election—God’s sovereign choice of us before the foundation of the world—reveals His grace and purpose. We are chosen not because of our merit but because of His love, to be holy and blameless in His sight. This divine selection removes the sting of rejection and the shame of our past, affirming our worth and value in God’s eyes. In Christ, our guilt is replaced with righteousness, a gift of grace that clothes us in the holiness of Jesus Himself.

Our adoption as sons and daughters of God through Christ is a profound truth that anchors our faith. This legal and relational act bestows upon us all the rights, privileges, and affections of God’s own children. We are no longer outsiders but cherished members of God’s family, with the freedom to call Him Father. This adoption is not a mere formality but a transformation that elevates us to a place of belonging and love in the divine family.

Living Out Our Heavenly Status

Understanding our heavenly status inspires us to face life’s challenges with courage and confidence. Whether we confront disease, financial instability, or uncertain futures, our place in Christ offers steadfast hope. Our earthly journey is a reflection of our spiritual reality, encouraging us to live out the blessings of our divine union and adoption in every aspect of our lives.

In light of these truths, our lives should be a continuous response of worship and witness. The blessings we have received in Christ compel us to proclaim His grace, sharing the hope and love we’ve found with a world in need. As we journey through Ephesians 1:3-6, let us embrace our identity, celebrate our divine selection, and live out our adoption with joy and purpose.
